Job Summary:
This position is responsible for assisting in the general maintenance of the Sacred Heart Center facilities, vehicles, and properties. The maintenance assistant’s responsibilities include helping the Maintenance Coordination in implementing preventative maintenance, working with service providers, performing regular inspections of equipment, vehicles, and supplies, and diagnosing and fixing any defects found. The maintenance assistant helps ensure the general upkeep of the lawns, yards, and grounds of SHC properties.
To be successful as a maintenance assistant, the incumbent will demonstrate excellent organizational skills, and be able to make good-decisions and judgment calls when needed to complete work. The maintenance assistant will meet regularly with the Coordinator and their supervisor to provide updates, discuss schedules of repairs, and plan for expenditures related to maintenance needs. The maintenance assistant helps contribute to the overall success of SHC as a valued part of the staff. The maintenance assistant will be able to work well with and coordinate projects with all departments, directors, and staff, and continuously look for ways to innovate methods and practices to reduce costs and time whenever reasonably possible.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assists in annual inspections of furnace, fire, air conditioners, and security systems.
- Helps maintain building structural integrity to include doors, windows, sheetrock, hinges, locks, etc.
- Provides general maintenance for projects including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and construction as needed to complete work requests.
- Helps to maintain building security by maintaining security door locks and access keys, fobs, and cards, and upkeep of door and window security monitoring devices.
- Provides regular lawncare including mowing, trimming/edging, and weed control for lawns, grass, shrubs, and trees.
- Removes snow from all sidewalks and parking areas as needed.
- Assists in pest control by applying chemicals or traps, scheduling with contractors, and/or removal of pests from SHC properties and facilities.
- Repair furniture, fixtures, and equipment on an as needed basis.
- Performs and maintains regular vehicle services schedules to include oil changes, tire care, cooling systems, vehicle interval services, etc.
- Helps maintain the records, logs, upkeep, service, and schedules repairs on all SHC vehicles or performs minor vehicle repair as qualified
- Helps maintain records and function of backup generator(s).
- Helps maintain records and logs all required inspections and repairs, completes work order requests as part of recordkeeping.
- Helps maintain an orderly working environment in the shop, all tools put away and cleaned as necessary and that clean-up is completed on-site after completion of project.
- Performs custodial duties such as cleans windows, sweeps/mops, removes trash, vacuum, and shampoo carpets, ensures restrooms are sanitary, etc.
- May work 40+ hours per week as required to meet the needs of SHC and its mission depending upon the time of year.
- Provides other services and work duties as needed to meet the needs of the Sacred Heart Center and its ability to carry out its mission.

This position is directly supervised by the Programs & Operations Administrator. Receives general guidance from the Maintenance Coordinator.
- Supervision Provided:
This position is a non-supervisory position.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Education and Experience:
- Minimum High School diploma or GED is required
- Graduate from Post-Secondary Vocational Technical program or college with appropriate certification or degree is preferred
- Previous Maintenance, Electrician, or Plumbing work experience strongly preferred
- Certifications in Electrical, Plumbing, HVAC, or similar desired
- Skills & Abilities:
- Maintain confidentiality in all departments
- Computer skills, must possess basic computer skills including use of Microsoft Word and Outlook with the ability to learn job-specific programs and software
- Interpersonal skills, must be able to communicate effectively with administrative staff and departmental staff
- Job Knowledge: possess necessary skills to complete necessary tasks for the position. Need background in basic plumbing, electrical, and carpentry skills.
- Understanding of processes of regular grounds maintenance including both lawn care and snow removal
- Additional Requirements:
- Possess a valid South Dakota Driver’s License
- Be able to safely operate a motor vehicle.
- Be able to safely operate other motorized vehicles including tractors, mowers, snow removal such as snowplow or scoops
- Successfully pass pre-employment Drug Screen

- Work Environment:
- Regularly works outdoors in various weather conditions where weather conditions may be extreme to include heat and cold exposure for extended periods each day
- Regular exposure to noise varying from low to high levels
- Occasionally working indoors in controlled temperatures and noise levels.
- Regular exposure to dust, dirt, and chemicals.
- Physical Requirements:
- Ability to wear hearing protection, gloves, facemasks, safety glasses, and other PPE as required to safely conduct the duties of this job.
- Regularly lift up to 25 lbs. and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance; occasionally lift up to 75-100 lbs. with assistance.
- Physical dexterity and endurance to safety conduct the duties of this job to include the use of fingers, hands, arms, legs, and body regularly throughout the workday.
- The ability to remain alert to the surroundings and soundly make quick decisions to maintain the safety of persons and equipment.
